« Back to Glossary Index

Depreciation is a method of allocating the cost of a tangible asset over its useful life. Businesses
depreciate long-term assets for both tax and accounting purposes. Consumption includes the
wearing out, using up or other reduction in the useful economic life of a tangible fixed asset whether
from use, passing of time or obsolescence through either changes in technology or demand for
goods and services produced by the asset.
